Job Title: Marketing Intern
Internship date(s): May 2007 – May 2009
University/College: McGill University
My usual day involves working on projects in several different areas that can include public relations, market research, events management, advertising and more! I have meetings a few times a week with different people in my department to get new projects or to catch up on the status of projects we’re working on. Since the projects I work on vary in size and duration, my days are always changing.
I was looking for a marketing position and applied to several companies, but after coming for the interview and getting a feel for the working environment, I was really excited to work here. During my interview I met with the people in my department and they asked me what areas of marketing I was most interested in, which they kept in mind when giving me projects.
I was really not expecting to learn so much or to get so much visibility and responsibility in the company. Through the Tech Talks, I learned a lot about the industry and I also had a lot of one-on-one learning in different areas of marketing with the people in my team.
I think that an internship is the one time that you’re not expected to know everything when you start a job. Everyone knows that as an intern, you’re gaining experience and knowledge that you wouldn’t have learned from school, so they’re eager to answer your questions and give you positive feedback and direction in your work.
This summer I helped to organize a company achievement party at a circus where we not only had a great time with the whole company, but we also arranged to build and sponsor a home for orphans in Namibia on behalf of Radialpoint. To me, it really embodied our spirit – we are very creative and work hard, but we never forget the human aspect of everything.
